It was terribly hard, to say the least, to write about my life, yet it made it easier doing so through turning it into a novel. I loved my family and life growing up in Scotland yet always wondered why I felt deep pain in my heart. After asking God to reveal the source of that unidentified pain He took me on a journey of a lifetime and within the pages of the book layer upon layer of hidden truths were gradually uncovered.
A doctor once told me that to write a letter to the person or persons who may have caused some of the pain we all suffer from throughout our lifetime, was the ultimate release of the wound. She didn't even insist that I mail my letter, but rather allowed me to chose how I was to discard it.
It amazed me to discover that as painful as it was to write to my abuser I couldn't let go of it immediately! I couldn't let go of a part of me that, albeit an excutiatingly painful part which had been sucking the life out of me, It was familiar to me and had actually grown to be one of those intricate layers of whom I saw myself to be. To give it up had become just as painful as the familiar pain itself.
After three weeks of walking past the drawer inwhich I'd placed the letter, one morning I got up and just knew it was the day of redemption. I pondered only for a moment in wondering how I was going to dispose of the wretched pages that lay in my trembling hands. To throw it in the trash would have meant to me that it still existed somewhere and to throw it into the sea or the tumbling current of a waterway would have meant the same. It still would have life somewhere out there.
I decided to take it outside and burn it.
As I lit the match and saw the pages curl and brown and die infront of my eyes I felt released from a prison I had had the key to myself. As powerful as that one act of obedience had proven itself to be, can you then imagine how powerfully freeing writing a whole book was?
In turning it into a novel I was then able to; not only write about the power of being set free from the shackles of cruel words spoken, ultimately leading into situations of abuse because of the lie I had been led to believe by the enemy, but of the power of forgiveness also.
The saying goes that; the truth will set us all free! But forgiveness sets us free indeed!!!!!
